Anthony R. “Tony” Selkey
Anthony R. “Tony” Selkey, 52, of Baraga
passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010, at Marquette General Hospital
where he had been a patient for two days.
He was born in L’Anse on Aug. 16, 1957, the son of the late Robert
and Gladys (Anderson) Selkey. Tony graduated from Baraga High School in
1975. He married the former Kathleen Baril in L’Anse on Nov. 23, 1986.
He was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Baraga.
Tony was the owner and president of Selkey Manufacturing Inc. since
1992. Tony was past president and current member of the Baraga County
Road Commission, past president of the Baraga County Community
Foundation and active in the Copper Country Humane Society.
Tony devoted his time, energy and resources to any activity or
organization that benefited the community. He championed youth oriented
sports including golf, hockey and other sports and was always a willing
sponsor for any cause that helped the Baraga area schools. Tony loved
his dogs and carrying on the family tradition which proclaimed him the
“sweet corn king”
Mr. Selkey is survived by his loving wife Kathleen, children Kenny
King of Baraga, T.J. Selkey of Baraga and Kristine (Wyler) Miller of
Pelkie, grandchildren Makenna and Bree Miller, sisters Liz Selkey of
Keweenaw Bay and Bethany (John) Preston of Baraga, two aunts and several
nieces, including his special niece Sheryl, nephews, great nephews and
cousins.
He was preceded in death by his brother “Butch’ in 2006, and
nephews, Josh, Jason, Peter, Michael and brother-in-law Donald.
Funeral services for Mr. Selkey were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan.
30, 2010, at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse with Pastor
John Henry officiating. Interment will take place in the Baraga
cemetery. The family greeted friends at the funeral chapel on Saturday
from noon until the time of the service. Following the service the
family invited friends to join them for fellowship and a luncheon at the
Baraga American Legion Post 444.

the arrangements.
Helen Elizabeth (Korpi) Morgan
Former Herman resident Helen Elizabeth (Korpi)
Morgan, 78, died on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, at the home of her daughter
in Wasilla, AK, after a prolonged illness. There are no plans for a
memorial at her request. A private dispersal ceremony will occur in
Hawaii later this year.
Helen was born March 19, 1931, in Negaunee, MI, to Swante H. Korpi
and Ada E. Kulju. She grew up in Herman, MI, and graduated from L’Anse
High School in 1949.
She supported her family as a waitress for many years and relocated
to Hawaii for five years, partnering in a restaurant with a friend. She
earned her real estate license in the late 1970’s and worked for nearly
25 years in Anchorage and Wasilla, retiring in January, 2008.
An adventurous spirit and a love of travel led her to drive the
AlCan Highway with her family in 1961 to homestead in the Hatcher Pass
area of Southcentral Alaska. She rafted on Oregon’s Rouge River and
traveled to many locations in Hawaii, Mexico and Australia.
Helen was an enthusiastic gardener who eagerly awaited Spring each
year. She enjoyed reading, with a novel always nearby. She loved playing
cards and dinner with her friends, and trips to Las Vegas.
“She was a good woman who went above and beyond the call of
motherhood, opening her home to many people over the years. Her sense of
humor helped carry her through hard times. She was direct and forthright
in her opinions and influenced the lives of many who came to know her.
Her presence will be dearly missed.”
Helen is preceded in death by her husband, Marvin; her sister,
Anita Mance; and granddaughter, Cena Morgan.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Bonnie
Morgan of Spirit Lake, ID; daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Bob Akin
of Wasilla, AK; grandchildren, Jared and Jacqueline Akin of Fairbanks,
AK, Joshua Akin of Gilbert, AZ, Terri and Gabe Martinez of Fallbrook,
CA, and Tim and Rachael Morgan of Spirit Lake, ID; great grandchildren,
Shiloh and Harmony Watford of Spirit Lake, ID, Alayna Martinez of
Fallbrook, CA and Micah Akin, Fairbanks, AK.
