Patrick W. Johnson

   Patrick W. Johnson, 54, of Skanee, MI, passed away suddenly Saturday, May 3, 2008, at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.
   Pat was born in Hancock, MI, November 12, 1953, son of the late Lauri and Virginia (Blankenship) Johnson. He attended school in L'Anse and was a 1971 graduate of L'Anse High School. On May 7, 1993, he married the former Karen Fox in Las Vegas. Pat was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Skanee, a former member of the L'Anse Fire Department and the Skanee Fire Department where he was former secretary. He was also a member of L'Anse Masonic Lodge 547 F&AM.
   Pat was the owner of Johnson and Berry Manufacturing Company in L'Anse until his retirement in 2006. They fabricated precision parts for Pettibone and Terex machines and others. Pat was an active sportsman enjoying hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, and restoring old tractors. He was fond of traveling, spending time in Florida and making maple syrup. Pat also loved to help others and was considered a "true" friend.
   Pat is survived by his loving wife Karen, son, Duane Johnson of South Carolina, daughter Katy, at home, grandchildren Makayla and Jesse Johnson, brother Michael (Mary) Johnson of L'Anse, sisters Sandra (Gary) Jaakkola of Brighton, MI. and Lynn (John) Mocan of Lake Ann, MI. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
   Funeral services for Pat were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 6, 2008, in the Zion Lutheran Church, Skanee with Judy Mattson officiating. Interment took place in the Skanee Cemetery.
   The family greeted friends on Monday evening, May 5, from 6 until 8 p.m at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse. The L'Anse Fire Department passed in review at 6:15 p.m. followed by a Masonic service at 8 p.m. A visitation was also held at the church on Tuesday for 1 hour before the service.
   The family suggests memorial contributions to the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse, MI. Friends may leave a message of condolence at www.rfsc.net

Robert F. (Bob) Huot

   The family of Robert F. (Bob) Huot, who passed away on December 4, 2007, will have a graveside service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2008.
   The family is extending an invitation to all who knew Bob, to join us in celebrating his life with a luncheon in the community room at Baraga Senior Housing, 412 Michigan Avenue, Baraga, at 12 noon.
   His son Bob and daughter Paulette want to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers.

Martha K. Wedlake

   Martha K. Wedlake, age 95, of L’Anse, MI passed away on Saturday, May 3, 2008, at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.
   She was born June 18, 1912, in South Range, a daughter of the late Sakari and Sophia (Hepo Oja) Olkkonen.
   Martha was a bookkeeper at Montgomery Wards in Chicago, IL. Following her retirement she shared her love of music while doing programs on the keyboard at the Bayside Village in L’Anse.
   She was preceded in death by her husband William Wedlake, brother Aarne Olkkonen, sisters Aino Hill and Kerttu-Robin Rintala and nephew John Hill of Skanee.
   She is survived by her daughter Lore Bigelow of Texas; granddaughters Virginia (Leonard) Dexter and family of Cocoa, FL; Susan (Raymond) Reasner of Rose City, MI; and Charmaine (Randy) Beers and great grand daughters Shannon, Charlene and Kasey of Waco, TX. Family members include Darlene Hill of Skanee, Joan Hill of L’Anse, Patricia (Henry) Clow of Aura and Arthur Hill of California. A special thank you to her nephew Dr. Karl Hill and his daughter Jean Hill for enabling her to remain comfortably at home until her time to pass on.
Internment will take place at the South Range Cemetery, South Range, MI.
   Memorials could be directed to the Aino S. Hill Scholarship Endowment Fund with the Baraga County Community Foundation, PO Box 352, L’Anse, MI 49946. The Jacobson Funeral Home in L’Anse is assisting the family.

Bernadine Paquette

   Bernadine Paquette, age 87 formerly of Baraga, passed away on Friday, May 2, 2008, in Hartford, WI.
   She was born January 11, 1921 in Baraga, MI daughter to the late Joseph and Delia Cadeau. Bernadine was married to Theodore Paquette; and then Garrett Bennink. In 1959 she moved to Menominee; she later lived in Crystal Falls, White Pine, and then moved to West Bend in 2005. Bernadine liked to sew, make clothes, read and enjoyed country music.
   Surviving are her sons, Danial (Lynne) Paquette of Keweenaw Bay, Paul (Barbara) Paquette of Champion, Gerald Paquette of Keweenaw Bay, Edman Paquette of Munising, Russell (Brenda) Paquette of Vernal, Utah, Raymond (Mary) Bennink of White Pine; daughters, Gwendolyn Greenley and Jean Blazier of West Bend, WI; sisters Alice Brochu of Holly, MI and Marie Wilmot of Clarkston, MI; ten grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren.
   Preceding her in death are her son Theodore Paquette Jr.; three brothers, Donald, Albert, and Joseph Cadeau; sister Margaret Fake.
   The funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 6, at 1 p.m. at Jacobson Funeral Home, visitation was one hour prior to the service. Deacon John Cadeau officiated. Burial was in the Baraga Cemetery. The Jacobson Funeral Home in L’Anse assisted the family.

William Roger McKay

   William Roger McKay, age 59 of Baraga, MI passed away on May 5, 2008, at his home.
   He was born March 8, 1949, in Laurium, MI son of Viola (Kero) and Kenneth M. McKay Sr. He attended Laird and Baraga schools. William liked to play cards at the VFW and loved the desert. He resided in Oklahoma City, Las Vegas, and Nisula prior to moving to Baraga 10 years ago. He enjoyed spending time with his friends and was a very loving and generous brother. He will be greatly missed.
   Surviving are his mother Viola Heikkinen of L’Anse; daughter Elizabeth Dawn McKay; brother Richard (Sue) McKay of Mass City, MI; sisters, Marcia Velmer of Baraga, Bonnie (Kenneth) Korttila of Leonard, MI, Diane (Timothy) Mayo of Baraga; sister-in-laws Wanda McKay of Ontonagon, MI, Donna Heikkinen of Grand Rapids, MI; many nieces and nephews.
   Preceded him in death are his father Kenneth M. McKay Sr.; step father Ronald W. Heikkinen; brothers Kenneth Michael McKay Jr., and Ronald Heikkinen.
   A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 9, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Baraga. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Rev. Ted Koehl will officiate. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L’Anse is assisting the family.
