Frances Ethel Elaine (Varline) Juntunen

   Frances Ethel Elaine (Varline) Juntunen, age 78 of Baraga passed away peacefully with her family at her side, on Saturday, June 27, 2009, at Bayside Village in L’Anse, following a long illness.
   Elaine was born on Feb. 26, 1931, in Baraga, MI, daughter of the late Carl and Sylvia (Pirkola) Varline. In 1949 she graduated from Baraga High School. She married T. Henry Juntunen and they moved to Clawson, MI, where she was a homemaker and a volunteer at the children’s grade school.
   Upon returning to Baraga in the 1960s, Elaine was an active community member which included being one of the original committee members of the Baraga Lumberjack Days. In 1965 they owned and operated the Bay View Inn & Quonset Bar; and later owned and managed the Side Track Bar in Baraga from 1969-84.
   Elaine enjoyed gardening and created beautiful flower gardens and bountiful vegetable gardens. She and her “Pa” would have friendly competitions to see who grew the best sweet corn; which the rest of the family loved to judge. She was an excellent seamstress and made the latest style of clothing and linens for her family. She also enjoyed playing cards, traveling, knitting, and crocheting.
   She is survived by a daughter B. Lynn (Larry) Marson of Lewiston, MI, son, Glenn (Wanda) Juntunen of Pelkie, MI, grandchildren Arjay H. Juntunen and Dustin C. Juntunen both of Pelkie, brother Rodney Varline of Baraga, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
   Elaine was preceded in death by her parents, two infant siblings, and daughter Kim A. Juntunen.
   A graveside service was held on Monday, June 29 at the Baraga Cemetery at 11 a.m. Rev. Scott Williams officiated. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L’Anse assisted the family.

David Harold Helsius

   David Harold Helsius, 77, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 28, 2009, at Aspirus Ontonagon Hospital’s Long Term Care Unit.
He was born in Trout Creek where he eventually began his career and love for the lumber industry. David also worked periodically in the insurance business.
   He was an elder and charter member of the Greenland Seventh-day Adventist Church and was instrumental in bringing together the people who would create such a unique log design.
   David was gifted with his hands, being able to artistically paint and make crafts. He was known for being able to fix anything.
   David is survived by his wife, Janet (Vercoe) Helsius, formerly of Ishpeming. They were married for 54 years and had five children; David, Jr. (Darlene) Helsius of Brookfield, OH, Kerri (Mark) Castleberg of Oconto, WI, Jeffrey (Virginia) Helsius of Oconto, WI, Cory (Diane) Helsius of Portland, OR, and Jonathon (Dana) Helsius of Raleigh, NC, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by his parents Harold and Ida (Olgnen), his sisters Audrey Hongisto and Verna Deterling and a niece Debra Deterling.
   A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 17 at 1 p.m. at the Greenland Seventh-day Adventist Church in Greenland, MI, Firesteel Road off of Highway M38. The Cane Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Irene Isabelle (Selden) McNamara

   Irene Isabelle (Selden) McNamara, RN, born and raised in L’Anse to Anna and George Selden, on Nov. 27, 1910, went home on Wednesday, June 24, 2009.
   She was preceded in death by her loving husband Daniel and many of her family and friends.
   Irene is survived by her brother Kelly Selden of L’Anse. Devoted mother of Patrick and his wife Judy, grandmother of Sherrie, Kelly, and Patrick; great grandmother of Matthew, Samantha, Nickolas, Daniel, Andrew, Brandon, Korrey, Savannah, Taylor and Paige. She leaves many nieces and nephews.
   Visitation was held on Monday, June 29, from 2 until 8 p.m. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 30 at 10:30 a.m. at Generations Funeral Home in Farmington Hills, MI.
   Burial followed at Holy Sepulcher where she was laid to rest with her husband.

Warren S. Tompkins

   Warren S. Tompkins, 81, of Fort Pierce, FL, died May 14, 2009, at the Treasure Coast Hospice House in Fort Pierce. Born in Philadelphia, PA., he was a resident of Fort Pierce for 44 years.
   He was a commercial truck driver by trade, a Navy Veteran of WWII and a member of American Legion Post #40.
   He is survived by his wife, Joyce, two sons, three daughters, two sisters, including locally, Diane Dompier of Baraga, 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
   Funeral services took place in Fort Pierce, FL.

Ellois Opal Paquette

   Ellois Opal Paquette, age 92 formerly of Skanee, MI, passed away on Sunday, June 28, 2009, at Rolling Hills Manor in Zion, IL.
   She was born Jan. 8, 1917, in Kuttawa, KY, daughter to the late Frank and Anna Grace (Young) Satterfield. Ellois moved to Chicago at the age of seven. She graduated from Libertyville, IL, High School; and then attended Lake College, business school, in Waukegan, IL.
   She moved to Skanee in 1947. Ellois married Wallace “Soupy” Paquette in 1965 in Baraga. They owned and operated George’s Bar in L’Anse for several years.
   Ellois was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Skanee, charter member of the Eagle’s Auxiliary, life member of the VFW Auxiliary, and the Happy 12 card gang. She enjoyed playing cards and reading.
   She is survived by her brothers Hal (Joan) Satterfield and Gerald Satterfield of Waukegan, IL; sisters, Bonnie Jean (Frank) Niemi of Gurnee, IL, Donna Volpe of Lake Forest IL, Edna Joyce (Dave) Dever of Waukegan IL, Betty (Jack) Anderson of Gurnee IL; 12 God children; and several nieces and nephews.
   Preceded in death are her husband Wallace “Soupy”; brother Reginald Satterfield; sisters Anna Mae Marcotte and Pauline Goetz; and six other siblings.
   Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 3, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Skanee. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Pastor Judy Mattson will officiate. Burial will be in the Skanee Cemetery.
   The Jacobson Funeral Home of L’Anse is assisting the family.
