Longtime Ely Township resident and business woman, Lillian E. Rock, 92,
Ishpeming, died on Dec. 24, 2003, at Munising Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held on Dec. 30, 2003, at
Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home, Ishpeming, Rev. Jeanette Ruusi and
Rev. Alan McCall officiated. Internment will be in the Ishpeming
Cemetery.

Joseph Nicholas Pertile, 52, of 302 Lakewood Lane, Harvey, died on Dec.
22, 2003 at Marquette General Hospital.

Ada I. Tervo, 86, a former resident of Arnheim, died Tuesday evening,

Memorial Hospital on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003 from an apparent heart
attack.

Aatos “Bill” Syrjala, age 85, formerly of Covington died on

Howard Edward Jarvey, 74, of Harbor Tower Apartments in Escanaba, died
on Nov. 24, 2003, at St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba.

Dean F. Hoornstra, formerly of L’Anse, died on Nov. 24, 2003, in
Coldwater, MI. Hoornstra and his family had lived in L’Anse for many
years. Hoornstra died on his 57th birthday.

Northern Michigan Hospital after a 19 month battle with cancer.

Baraga on Nov. 8, 1935.

Margaret Doris (Sands) Molloy was born Jan. 29, 1914, in L’Anse, died

from injuries due to an industrial accident.

Frances Stupak
Surrounded by family, Frances Stupak, 79, died early on Sunday morning,
Oct. 26, 2003, at her home in East Lansing, MI. Stupak suffered from a
rare form of lung cancer and died after a lengthy illness, said her son,
Congressman Bart Stupak. Her husband Frank Stupak Sr. predeceased her in
1987.
A mass of Christian burial was held at 6 p.m.

George J. Novak, age 77 of Stambaugh Township, died on Monday, Sept. 29,
2003, at his hunting camp on the Pendelton Creek, due to injuries
sustained when a tree fell on him.

Foster Knox Alspaugh, 2 years, 11 months, died on March 30, 2003,
following a sudden illness. He was born on April 19, 2000 to Daren Scott
Alspaugh and Kimberly Baez Knox, of Georgetown, CO.
Alspaugh is survived by several local
relatives. Paternal grandparents are Ann and Fred Alspaugh, summer
residents of Keweenaw Bay. Maternal grandparents are Rene Knox and John
Knox of Lake Pleasant, NY. Aunts and uncles include Jack and Kathy Weber
of Palmer, Jerry and Connie Lytikai-nen of L’Anse, and Ruth and Clyde
Baker of Keweenaw Bay and Mon-arch Beach, CA. Foster also leaves his
younger sister, Chloe Rose Alspaugh.

“Foster Knox Alspaugh was here on earth for just a brief time. He was
born on April 19, 2000, and died on March 30, 2003. During that time he
had a huge impact on so many people’s lives. He brightened a room just
be being there. He made people want children. If you knew Foster you

“He hit the ground running and left in a
hurry, generating love and laughter all the way. Foster sparkled like a
snowman in the sun, and made the world a better place because he was

“He is on a train to paradise, and will be

Angeline Cronkright, 71, of Trout Creek, died on Sunday, April 13, 2003,
at Midwestern Regional Medi-cal Center in Zion, IL.
Funeral services will be Saturday, April 19,
2003, at 11 a.m. (EDT) at the Wandersee Funeral Home in Bruce Crossing.
The Rev. John Fish from First Baptist Church in Iron River will
officiate. Interment will be in Sidnaw Cemetery. Friends may call at the

Genetta M. Cole, 64, of Charlevoix, died on March 11, 2003, at Grandvue
Medical Care Facility, East Jordan.
A funeral service was held at Winchester
Funeral Home, Charlevoix, MI, on March 14, 2003, with the Rev. James
Green officiating. Burial was in New Holstein, WI. Donations may be made

Louise M. Taylor, 85, of L’Anse and a winter resident of Zephyr Hills,
FL, died in Florida on Thurs-day, April 3, 2003, following an illness of
several months. A local memorial service for Taylor will be scheduled at
a later date. The Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse has been
entrusted with arrangements.

Marion L. Grunst, 79, of Pelkie, died on Friday, April 4, 2003, at her
residence.
Funeral services for Grunst will be held on
Friday, April 11, 2003, at 1 p.m. at Mission United Lutheran Church in
Pelkie with Pastor Michael Laakko officiating. Spring burial will take
place in the Pelkie Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 11
a.m. Friday, April 11, 2003, until time of service. The Reid Funeral

Stewart Milton Robbins, age 79, of Skanee died on March 27,2003, in
Fenton at his daughter’s home. Visitation will be in Carman Funeral
Home in Brown City prior to the funeral service on Wednesday. Funeral
services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. with Elder John Murray officiating.
Burial will be in Valley Center Cemetery. Military Honors will be
provided by the Peck American Legion. Memorials may be made to the
American Lung Society.

Patricia Ann Kemppainen, age 70 of Baraga, died on Tuesday, March 25,
2003, at Marquette General Hospital.

James “Jim” Dale McMahon, age 42 of Galesburg, MI, formerly of
Baraga, died suddenly on Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at Borgess Hospital in
Kalamazoo, MI.

Laverne M. Chappell died at home in Marquette on March 5, 2003. She was
born on June 11, 1936, in Michigamme.
A private memorial service will take place in
the summer at Lakeview Cemetery in Michigamme, overlooking the lake. In
lieu of flowers, Chappell requested that her friends make donations to
the Michigamme Museum.
