Paula L. Tormala
Paula L. Tormala, 52, of Gwinn, died Monday
afternoon, April 21, 2008, at Marquette General Hospital.
She was born October 24, 1955, in Highland Park, Michigan to the
late George & Ileen (Delorye) Phillips. She was raised in the
L’Anse/Baraga area and graduated from Baraga High School. On August 16,
1975, she married David Tormala, Sr. in L’Anse.
She enjoyed working on her computer and listening to country music.
Paula is survived by her husband, David Tormala, Sr. of Gwinn; sons,
Jeffrey Tormala of Calumet, James (Brandi) Tormala of Gwinn and David
Tormala, Jr of Gwinn; sister, Lynn South of L’Anse; her “grandpoodles”,
Precious & Midnight; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces & nephews. She
was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Janet.
A memorial service was held on Friday, April 25, 2008, at 2 p.m. in
the Canale-Gwinn Funeral Home with Rev. Ben Paris officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Paula’s family
in care of Brandi & James Tormala.

Loretha Rolloff
Loretha Rolloff, age 87 of Covington, MI
passed away on Wednesday, April 23, 2008, at Covington Rest Home.
Loretha was born on February 2, 1921 in Dallas Center, Iowa
daughter to the late Bennett and Beulah (Kell) Evans. She was known as
Lori to some and Peg to others. Loretha went to Eunice Elementary School
and Summerville High School, graduating in 1939.
She first married Montell Walters in 1939 and lived in the St.
Louis Area. After her divorce she married Arthur Leudke and lived in
Racine WI; he preceded her in death. She then married Forest Rolloff and
moved to Sidnaw where she resided for 20 years prior to going into the
Covington Rest Home. Forest preceded her in death; then she met her
significant other, Warren Flinchum of Sidnaw who also precedes her in
death. Loretha loved to cook and liked to travel.
Surviving are her sister Nadine Kaignin of Manchester, MO; many
nieces and nephews; her friends in Sidnaw; and her second family at
Covington Rest Home. Preceding her in death is a sister Gwendolyn Lewis.
There will be no visitation or funeral service. The Jacobson

Barbara L. Hietikko
Barbara L. Hietikko, 76, of Baraga, MI,
passed away Monday evening, April 7, 2008 at the Mather Nursing Center
in Ishpeming where she had been a resident for 2 months. She was born in
Grand Rapids on Jan. 8, 1932 the daughter of the late Everett and Grace
(Barrows) Pearce. Barbara graduated from Baraga High School. She worked
for a time as a clerk in real estate.
Barbara married Waino Hietikko in Trout Creek, MI. on Oct. 14,
1950. He preceded her in death on July 6, 2003. Barbara was a member of
Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Baraga, the W.E.L.C.A. and the L'Anse-Baraga
Red Hat Society. She was very active in various community clubs and
organizations. In addition, she was an amateur painter, and enjoyed
gardening, particularly flowers and quilting.
Mrs. Hietikko is survived by her loving family, sons, Ken Hietikko
of Ishpeming, Brad Hietikko of Grand Rapids, MI. and Steven Hietikko of
Baraga, grandchildren, Levi and Brandon, and great grandchild, Mason,
brother, Robert (Sue) Pearce, sister, Sarah (Marvin) Tolon of Grand
Rapids, one sister-in-law, four nieces, a nephew and numerous cousins
A memorial funeral service for Mrs. Hietikko will be held at 11
a.m., Saturday, April 19, 2008 from Holy Cross Lutheran Church with
Pastor Scott Williams officiating. The family will receive friends at
the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until time of the service. Memorials
in Mrs. Hietikko's honor may be directed to the Copper Country Humane
Society. Envelopes will be available at the church.

Myrtle R. Maloney
Myrtle R. Maloney, 100 years old, formerly
of Baraga, passed away Tuesday evening April 8, 2008, at Bayside
Village, L'Anse, where she had been a resident for several years. She
was born in Baraga on Oct. 29, 1907 the daughter of the late Henry and
Olevina (Foucault) Ross.
Myrtle graduated from Baraga High School in 1925. She married Lawrence
Maloney at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Baraga in 1955. He preceded her in
death in 1983. Myrtle had worked for the former county welfare
department as a secretary. She was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church
and the Womans Order of Foresters. Myrtle was the family historian, she
enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing and playing bingo.
Mrs. Maloney is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces,
great nephews and cousins, and special friend, Pauline Kalupske of Green
Bay, WI. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Patricia Maloney in
2005, two brothers, and eight sisters.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 11 a.m., Friday, April
11, 2008, from St. Ann's Catholic Church, Baraga with Father George
Maki, celebrant. Interment w ill take place in the Baraga Cemetery. The
family greeted friends at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until time
of the Mass.
Memorials in Mrs. Maloney's honor may be directed to the Bayside

Todd David Peterson
Todd David Peterson, age 44 formerly
of Alston, MI passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, March 27, 2008, at his
residence in Davison, MI.
Todd was born on Dec. 1, 1963 in Iron Mountain, MI. He
attended Laird School in Alston and graduated in 1982 from L'Anse High
School. He held various jobs during his short life. Todd loved to write
music, play his guitar and enjoyed fishing. Surviving are his parents
Pat and Bonnie Peterson of DePere, WI., three sisters, Lolita (Rick)
Slafter of Racine, WI., Robin Peterson of Columbia, MD., and Ava
(Robert) Blair of Manassas,VA. He also leaves his girlfriend Teri
Simmons and her family, several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and
cousins.
Todd was preceded in death by a brother, Kevin Scott, his
maternal grandparents Mitchell and Clarice Lantagne and paternal
grandparents Bill and Eva Harju.
A visitation was held at the Swanson Funeral Home in Flint,
MI.
Todd's ashes will be buried in a private service to be held in the
Niagara, WI., cemetery in May.
Anna C. Brazeau
Anna C. Brazeau, 93, of L'Anse passed away
Thursday evening April 10, 2008 at Bayside Village, L'Anse. She had been
a resident there for nine months. Anna was born in Calumet, MI., on Jan.
8, 1915, the daughter of the late,Matt and Margaret (Maijmih) Muvrin.
She attended school in Bovine. Anna married George Brazeau in L'Anse on
Nov. 18, 1939. He preceded her in death on November 17, 2002. Anna was a
member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and the former Altar Society.
She enjoyed playing bingo, fishing, going to the casino, cooking, and in
her earlier years worked on their farm.
Mrs. Brazeau is survived by her loving children, Joseph (Christine)
of L'Anse, Barbara (Aldrick) Sirard of Midland, MI., and Mary (Stuart)
Lahti of L'Anse, 19 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, 7 great-great
grandchildren, and sister Agnes James of Spokane, WA. Numerous nieces,
nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, and cousins also survive. She was
preceded in death by her daughter Margaret in 2002, one brother, and
four sisters.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 11a.m., Tuesday, April
15, 2008 from Sacred Heart Catholic Church, L'Anse with Father George
Maki, celebrant. Spring interment will take place in the Evergreen
Cemetery.
The family received friends on Monday, April 14, 2008 from 6 p.m.
until 8 p.m. at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse. Monday
evening a parish prayer service was held at 7 p.m. in the funeral
chapel. Mrs. Brazeau's obituary may also be viewed and condolences

Kim Alane Juntunen
Kim Alane Juntunen, 40, of Elo, beloved
daughter and dear sister passed away suddenly at her home on Monday,
March 31, 2008. She was born in Hancock, MI, on August 19, 1967, the
daughter of Thomas Henry and Elaine Francis (Varline) Juntunen. Kim
graduated from Baraga High School in 1985. She attended Mott Community
College in Flint and graduated from Mr. David's School of Cosmetology
also in Flint. Kim had lived in Flint and Naples, FL prior to moving to
Elo.
She was employed at Smart Style Hair Salon in Houghton. Kim was a
member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Baraga. She was an ardent gardener
and enjoyed growing vegetables, especially hot peppers, and canning the
fruits of her labor.
Kim loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter, fisher woman, and
enjoyed snowshoeing, swimming and bird watching.
Ms. Juntunen is survived by her mother Elaine of L'Anse, father,
Henry and stepmother, Sharon Haynes Juntunen of Naples, FL and Hancock,
sister, B. Lynn (Larry) Marson of Lewiston, MI., brother, Glenn H.
(Wanda) Juntunen of Pelkie, two nephews, Arjay H. Juntunen and Dustin C.
Juntunen both of Pelkie, companion, Ron Jukkala, aunts, Eleanor
Taurianinen of Naples, FL., Helmi (Arthur) McHardy of Naples, FL., Linda
Lohela (also Kim's Godmother) of Mohawk, MI., Shirley (Franklin)
Wooldridge of Newark, DE, Lorraine Coleman of Rochester Hills, MI.,
Elsie Sheppard of Sterling Heights, MI. and Rodney Varline of Baraga.
Several cousins and her furry “kids” Slippery and Sparky also survive.
Kim was preceded in death by her grandparents, Carl and Sylvia (Pirkola)
Varline and Thomas and Selma (Naamanka) Juntunen, uncles, Charles
Juntunen, Henry Lohela, Arthur Taurianinen, Harold Sheppard, aunts,
Jenny Holstein and Mae Juntunen, cousins Thomas McHardy and Brian
Sheppard.
There will be no visitation or service at this time. A celebration
of Kim's life will be held later this summer. The family also asks that
any expressions of sympathy be directed to the charity of your choice in
Kim's name. Kim will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.

Stella Cecelia Lahti
Stella Cecelia Lahti, age 88, of L’Anse,
passed away on Monday, April 7, 2008, at Bayside Village in L’Anse.
She was born Oct. 24, 1919, in Assinins, MI daughter of the late
Edward and Mary (Cardinal) Vashaw. Stella married Toivo Lahti on June
17, 1939 in Assinins.
Stella enjoyed gardening and playing Bingo. She was a member of
Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Eagles Aerie #2287 Auxiliary, KBIC, and
the Ojibwa Seniors.
Surviving are her children, Paul Lahti, Jim (Rhonda) Lahti, and
Elvera (Fred) Lantz of L’Anse; four grandchildren, Malisha Maki, Mindy
Lantz, Don Lantz, Jesse Lahti; six great grandchildren, Miah and Megan
Maki, Anna Pietila, Donovyn and Emberlee Lantz, and Kaylee Lahti.
Preceding her in death are her husband Toivo in 1991, one brother, and
three sisters.
A Memorial Mass for Stella and her husband Toivo will be held
on Saturday, April 12, 2008 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church at 11a.m. A
luncheon and fellowship will follow the service in the church hall.

LaVerne Veronica Mager
LaVerne Veronica Mager, 70 of Baraga died
Wednesday, April 2, 2008 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.
She was born July 5, 1937 in Baraga, MI. A daughter of the late
James and Frances (Jondreau) Cardinal. Laverne grew up in Baraga, and
was a graduate of Baraga High School. She then attended Northern
Michigan University and graduated with an LPN Degree.
She was married to James Cote' who preceded her in death in 2003.
She then married William Mager in 1972 in Ishpeming. He preceded her in
death in May 1990.
LaVerne worked at Bell Memorial Hospital, Acocks and Valenti's
Nursing Home, and Marquette General Hospital. She then retired at the
age of 62.
LaVerne's leisure activities included reading, knitting and
beading. She was very caring and always willing to help people and her
grandkids. She was also active with the Ojibwa Seniors.
She is survived by a daughter, Catherine Cote of Ishpeming; sons,
James Cote of Baraga, Timothy Cote of Marquette, and Patrick
Mager(Christina) of Marquette; a brother Mike (Agatha) Cardinal of
Baraga; sisters, Carol (Larry) Thiele of Mexico, Elizabeth Sullivan of
Milwaukee, and Eleanor Mode of Baraga; eight grandchildren and four
great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
LaVerne was preceded in death by a brother James Cardinal Sr. and a
sister Sandy Dowd.
Funeral services were held on Monday, April 7, 2008 at 1 p.m., at
the Holy Name Jesus Church in Baraga. With visitation from 11 a.m. until
time of service. Father George Maki officiated. The Jacobson Funeral
Home of L'Anse assisted the family.

Grace Ruth Reed
Grace Ruth Reed, age 86 of L’Anse, passed
away on Sunday, March 30, 2008 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.
Grace was born on Dec. 22, 1921 in Dollar Bay, MI. She married
Melvin Reed on May 10, 1941 in Hancock. They co-owned Reed’s Marine for
over 30 years. Grace also was a waitress at the Nite Owl and the Central
Café in L’Anse. She enjoyed baking, traveling, socializing with friends
and being with family. She loved her grandkids and was always concerned
about their well-being.
Grace was a member of United Lutheran Church, life member of the
VFW Post 3897 Auxiliary, American Legion Post 444 Auxiliary, and
Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2287 Auxiliary.
Surviving are her daughters Sharon (Gerald) Niemi of L’Anse and
Barbara (Philip) Nankervis of Skanee; sister-in-law Ruth Ann Niemi of
L’Anse; eight grandchildren; Kevin Niemi of Chicago, Jerry Niemi of
L’Anse, Lori Niemi of L’Anse, Tammy Frazier of Spokane, WA, Billy
Nankervis of L’Anse, Jamie Reed of L’Anse, Jennifer Reed of L’Anse,
Krystal Heikkinen of L’Anse; six great grandchildren; Toby, Jordan,
Meaghan, Devin, Haylee Grace, and Cheyanne; and several nieces and
nephews.
Preceding her in death are her parents Gus and Mae (Chapman)
Johnson; husband Melvin; daughter Sandra Kay Reed; son Robert “Bobby”
Reed; and great grandson Jerry Lee Drew-Niemi.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 3, 2008 from 1-3 p.m. at
United Lutheran Church in L’Anse. Funeral service will be at 3 p.m. with
Rev. Scott Williams officiating. Burial will be in the spring in the
L’Anse Evergreen Cemetery. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L’Anse is

Ronald I. Heikkinen
Ronald I. Heikkinen, age 50, of Grand
Rapids, MI, formerly of Nisula, MI, passed away on March 27, 2008 at
Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. Ronald was born October
21, 1957, in L'Anse, MI to Ronald W. Heikkinen and Viola E. (Kero)
Heikkinen.
Ronnie attended Laird School in Alston and graduated in 1975 from
L'Anse High School. Ronnie worked at Pettibone in Baraga, MI, for over
20 years before moving to Grand Rapids.
Ronnie was an avid baseball fan. He played and coached baseball for
many years. He also loved spending time with his family and friends.
Ronnie will be remembered for his endless jokes, generous nature and his
willingness to help any friend in need.
Ronnie is survived by his wife, Donna, of Grand Rapids, a daughter,
Rhonda L. Heikkinen, of Ewen; a son Charles J. Heikkinen of Ontonagon, a
daughter, Tara Heikkinen, of Ewen; his mother, Viola E. Heikkinen, of
L'Anse, his brothers and sisters, Richard (Sue) McKay of Mass City;
Marcia Velmer of Baraga, William McKay of Baraga, Bonnie (Kenneth)
Korttila of Leonard, Diane (Tim) Mayo of Baraga; his sister-in-law,
Wanda (Mike) McKay of Ontonagon; four granddaughters, Cassidy, Sierra,
Chloe and Karalee; one grandson, Colton, and numerous nieces and
nephews. Ronnie will be making his journey to heaven with his brother
Kenneth (Mike) McKay who passed away on March 29, 2008.
Ronnie was preceded in death by his father, Ronald W. Heikkinen.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 4, 2008 at 4 p.m. at
Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Baraga with Pastor Ted Koehl officiating.
Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service.

Kenneth Michael “Mike” McKay
Kenneth Michael “Mike” McKay, age 61, of
Ontonagon, passed away Saturday, March 29, 2008, at Aspirus Ontonagon
Hospital. He was born on October 27, 1946 in Hartford, CT to Kenneth M.
McKay, Jr. and Viola E. Heikkinen.
Mike served in the US Army and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He
worked at the White Pine Mine, attended Gogebic Community College
receiving his Associates Degree in accounting. Most recently he was
employed at the Ojibwa Casino and Resort.
On August 15, 1992 he was united in marriage to Wanda Giesau in
Ontonagon, MI. Mike was an avid bowler, a member of the Press Box
Bowling Team, loved to play cards, do puzzles and shared his wife’s love
of cats. Mike will be remembered for his thoughtfulness and generous
nature. He was an inspiration and source of strength for his family
during his courageous battle with cancer.
Mike is survived by his beloved wife Wanda, son Justin (Sarah)
McKay, daughters Lisa (Cameron) Bledsoe and Jessica (Brandon) Dompier,
mother Viola Heikkinen, brothers Richard (Sue) McKay and William McKay,
sisters Marcia Velmer, Bonnie (Kenneth) Korttila and Diane (Timothy)
Mayo, eight grandchildren Bud, Chance, Logan and Morgan Bledsoe, Kylie,
Addison and Brooklyn Dompier and Lucas McKay and numerous nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father Kenneth M. McKay, Jr.,
step-father Ronald W. Heikkinen and brother Ronald I. Heikkinen.
Visitation will take place Wednesday April 2, 2008, at St. Paul
Lutheran Church in Ontonagon from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will
be held Thursday April 3, at 1 p.m. Friends may also call from noon
until the time of the service at the church on Thursday.

Rauha Aileen Kultala Schwalm
Rauha Aileen Kultala Schwalm, age 88, of
Baraga, passed away on Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at Baraga County
Memorial Hospital.
She was born on Dec. 28, 1919, in Baltic, MI daughter to the late Frans
“Eli” and Maria (Somero) Kultala. Aileen attended Baltic and Pelkie
schools and graduated from Baraga High School in 1940. She lived in
Pelkie from 1946 until moving to Baraga in 1990. Aileen married Fred
Schwalm her loving husband of 59 years.
She was a member of the Baraga Senior Center, Baraga Civic Club,
and the Red Hat Society. Aileen enjoyed doing needle work and traveling.
Surviving are her son Fred Schwalm Jr. of Pelkie; daughter Karen
(Glenn Robertson) Schwalm of Port McNeill, B.C., Canada; brothers
William Kultala of St. Claire Shores, MI, Ray (Winnie) Kultala of
Glendale, AR; sister Betty Pelto of Sterling Heights, MI; two step
grandchildren Kim (Ryan) Shier and Nolan Robertson both of British
Columbia, Canada; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death are her husband Fred; brother Frank Kultala;
sisters Ann Muckenfuss and Helga Edelen.
Graveside services will be held in the Pelkie Cemetery in the

Larry Thomas
Larry Thomas, age 69, a well known L’Anse
Business man passed away unexpectedly at his home on Wednesday, March
19, 2008. He was born Nov. 11, 1938 in Woodstock, IL, the son of Dale
and Mable (Davison) Thomas. On Sept. 17, 1960 he married Carrie Lou Juul.
Larry moved to L’Anse from McHenry, IL and was a resident of Baraga
County for 33 years. Larry was the owner and operator of Thomas Ford
Motors of L’Anse. Larry was an active member with the Masons, Keweenaw
Bay Shiners, L’Anse Lions, and the Downtown Development Committee,
serving as chairman for a number of years. Larry also served on the Ford
Dealer Ad Council for the Upper Peninsula and Wisconsin Ford Dealers
Association.
Larry was an active member of the Methodist Church locally and
district wide and he was on the finance committee as a chairperson for a
number of years.
Preceding him in death are his parents, brother Donald, and sister,
Marge.
He is survived by his wife Carrie Lou of forty-seven and half
years, one daughter, Julie (Bill) Fleck of Sparta, NJ, one son, Kent
(Lori) Thomas of L’Anse and three grandchildren, Michael, Megan, and
Brooke.
Visitation was at the Jacobson's Funeral Home on Monday, March 24,
2008, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. There was a Masonic Service at 7 p.m. at the
funeral home. The funeral service was held on Tuesday, March 25, 2008,
at United Methodist Church in L’Anse at 11 a.m. with Pastor John Henry
officiating. Visitation was one hour prior to the funeral service.
Burial will take place in the Pequaming Cemetery in the spring.

Lester E. ‘Ogimaa-Giizhik’ Drift Jr.
Lester E. ‘Ogimaa-Giizhik’ Drift Jr., 42,
of L'Anse passed away suddenly Tuesday, March 18, 2008, at Baraga County
Memorial Hospital. He was born in Duluth, MN on April 24, 1965 the son
of Lester E. and Karen (Strong) Drift Sr. Lester attended school in Orr,
MN.
He married the former Frances Chosa in Zeba on July 12, 1987.
Lester owned and operated his own roofing company, Drift Roofing in
L'Anse. He was a member of the Bois Forte Indian Community in Nett Lake,
MN and the L'Anse Area School Board.
Lester enjoyed attending and participating in pow wows, coaching
little league, bingo and playing computer chess.
Mr. Drift is survived by his loving family; wife, Frances,
children, Alden (Angela) Connor of L'Anse, Dan (Beth) Connor of L'Anse,
Tiara Drift, Taylor Drift, Tiana Drift, Trinity Drift, Tina (John)
Messer, Tanya Miller, and Teresa Miller all of L'Anse, eight
grandchildren, his parents, brothers, Peter (Lori) Drift, Mark Drift,
and Bart Drift, sister Karlene (Donald) Chosa, and Farrah Drift.
Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive. He was preceded in
death by his grandparents.
Traditional funeral services for Mr. Drift were held at 10 a.m.
Saturday, March 22, 2008 at the Ojibwa Community College gymnasium,
Baraga. Spring interment will take place in the Assinins Cemetery. The
family greeted friends at the gymnasium on Friday, March 21, 2008 from 6
p.m. until 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. until time of the service.

Raymond Charles Marinich
Raymond Charles Marinich, age 86, of Skanee,
MI, passed away on Monday, March 17, 2008 at the Baraga County Memorial
Hospital after a lengthly illness.
Ray was born in Bovine, MI, on Jan. 22, 1922, the son of George and
Anna Marinich.
Preceding him in death are his parents, brothers George, John, Joe
and sisters Ann, Mary, Margaret, and also his son Ray Allan.
He was a loving and caring husband to Irma and a beloved father to
Linda (Russ) Brunner, Eagle, WI, Laura (Gene) Cristan, Milwaukee, WI,
Robert (Cheryl) Marinich, Milwaukee, WI, Leona (Tom) Magnant, DePere,
WI, Lisa (Tony) Marinich, Skanee, MI, Lois (Dan) Roth, Port Washington,
WI; and sister Josephine Campeau of L’Anse. He also has eight
grandchildren and three great- grandchildren.
Ray served in the Army for two years. Married his beloved wife Irma
on Jan. 28, 1950. They moved to Milwaukee, WI, where he was a mason
contractor and owned Allstate Concrete in Butler, WI, for 20 years. He
was then self- employed as a maintenance contractor in Milwaukee, WI.
Ray and Irma retired in 1979 when they moved back to Baraga County,
and resided in Skanee. They lived on beautiful Huron Bay, members of the
Skanee Zion Lutheran Church. He also was a member of the Eagles and the
American Legion of L'Anse.
Ray's passion was fishing for lake trout by the Huron Islands and
dancing, especially at the Aura Jamboree. He also loved hunting, camping
and traveling. Ray and Irma were snowbirds; the first 10 years in
Florida and then 11 years in Texas.
Ray had so many friends and he lived for his family and will be
deeply missed by his wife and children.
The family would like to thank the BCMH and SNU for all their care
and love they gave our father in his time of need. The nursing care in
these two facilities, were more than a family could ask for. Thank you
from the bottom of our hearts.
Visitation will be at the Jacobson's Funeral Home on Thursday,
March 20, 2008, from 6-8 p.m. The funeral service will be on Friday,
March 21, 2008, at Zion Lutheran Church in Skanee at 1 p.m. Visitation
will be one hour prior to the funeral service also.
Burial will take place in the Skanee Cemetery. There will be a
memorial service for Ray in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the
Zion Lutheran Church in Skanee, MI.

Ursula E. Sands
Ursula E. Sands, age 96, of L’Anse passed
away Sunday, March 16, 2008 at Bayside Village in L’Anse after a short
illness.
She was born March 14, 1912 in Baraga, MI, daughter of John and
Emma (Stone) Cote. Ursula graduated from Baraga High School in 1930. She
married Thiell Sands on Feb. 8, 1936 at the Sacred Heart Church in
L’Anse and he preceded her in death on April 1, 1956.
Ursula was a very active member in the Sacred Heart Church of
L’Anse and was a member of the alter society. She worked at the Buckhorn
Restaurant for a few years and then worked for the Village of L’Anse as
a deputy clerk for 23 years, retiring in 1977.
Ursula is survived by her daughter, Sharon Sands of L’Anse, and her
son, Jack “Truly” Sands of Union City, CA, and her brother, Berthold
“Curly” Cote of L’Anse, and several nieces and nephews.
Preceded her in death are her brothers, George, Fred, and Leo Cote
and infant brother Francis, and one sister, Mary Voskuhl.
Funeral services for Ursula will be held on Wednesday, March 19,
2008 at 11 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Church in L’Anse with a Rosary
Service at 10:30 a.m. and visitation 9:30 a.m. until time of service.
Father Augustin George will officiate. Burial will be in the spring in
the L’Anse Evergreen Cemetery. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L’Anse is

Sylvia Johnson
Sylvia Johnson, age 96, formerly of Pelkie
passed away Thursday, March 13, 2008 at Bayside Village in L’Anse where
she has resided for the past 15 years.
S he was born March 2, 1912 in Herman, MI daughter to the
late Fabian and Julia (Kujala) Torvinen. Sylvia graduated from L’Anse
High School. She lived in Herman and then moved to Detroit where she
lived for 35 years and worked as a clerk for New York Central Railroad.
In 1973 she moved to Pelkie. Sylvia was a member of Mission United
Lutheran Church and a former member of the VFW Auxiliary.
Surviving are her sister Hilia Huhtala of Hancock, MI and many
nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death are her husband Edward Johnson; sisters Aune
Beels and Taimi Autio; brother Tauno Torvinen.
The funeral service was held on Monday March 17, at the Jacobson
Funeral Home. Visitation was one hour prior to the service. Rev. John
Autio officiated. Burial will be in the spring in the Pelkie Cemetery.

Ruth (nee Cote) Niva, age 78 of Taylor, MI,
died on Thursday, March 6, 2008.
Loving wife of the late Markus. Beloved mother of Roger, Greg
(Nicky), and Terri (Joe) Kitz.
Dear sister of Betty Donahue, Dorie Sarazin, Phyllis Kovach, the
late Eileen Moore, and the late Daniel Cote.
Also survived by four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday March 10, 2008 from the Taylor

Candace L. “Candy” Collins
Candace L. “Candy” Collins, 45, of L'Anse,
passed away Monday, March 10, 2008 at Marquette General Hospital where
she had been a patient for a week. She was born in L'Anse on Nov. 27,
1962, the daughter of Gary and Geraldine (Herrala) VanHaecke. Candy
attended school in L'Anse. She enjoyed fishing, knitting and crocheting.
Candy is survived by her loving children, Jeremy Collins of L'Anse,
Jerod Collins of L'Anse, Jesse Collins of L'Anse, Jake (Lee Ann) Collins
of Lake Linden, Bobby Tembreull of Ishpeming, Kyle Chagnon of Niagara,
WI. and Ashley Collins of Westland, MI., grandchild, Christian of Lake
Linden, mother, Geraldine VanHaecke of L'Anse, and brothers, Jesse
VanHaecke of L'Anse, and Camiel VanHaecke of Kinross, MI. She is
also survived by a niece and nephew and several cousins. She was
preceded in death by her father.

Samuel L. Spruce
Samuel L. Spruce, age 72 of Keshena, passed
away Sunday, Feb. 24, 2008 at his home. Born on Nov. 4, 1935 in L’Anse,
MI, he was the son of the late Samuel and Margaret Spruce and member of
the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community. Sam served with the United States
Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged on Jan. 25,
1957. On Dec. 20, 1962 he was united in marriage to Veronica Nunway in
Shawano.
After moving to this area 35 years ago, Sam worked as a Tribal
Police Officer for the Menominee Tribe. He had also owned and operated
his own trucking company with his sons and was also employed at
Menominee Tribal Enterprise as a truck driver in the mill and later at
the Menominee Casino as a security guard.
Sam and Vera were foster parents for many children. On August 12,
1998 Veronica preceded him in death. Sam was a member of the St.
Anthony’s Catholic Church and the Menominee Snowmobile Club.
He enjoyed bowling and bowled on a number of different leagues. He also
enjoyed shooting pool, playing bingo and slots, hunting, fishing,
picking berries, playing poker with his family and friends, attending
pow-wows, and spending time with his many children and grandchildren.
He was a loyal Packer fan, Cubs fan, San Antonio Spurs fan, and #17 Matt
Kenseth fan, who was his favorite NASCAR driver.
Sam is survived by: his children, Jerry (Girl) Nunway of Keshena,
Samuel “Oscar” (Kelly) Spruce, Jr. of Oneida, Marvin “Zeb” (Toni)
Spruce, Sr. of Green Bay, Jeffrey “Razz” Spruce of Keshena, Violet
(Allen) Ninham of Gresham, Carol (Bill) Tyler of Keshena, Debra (John)
Spruce of South Branch, Margaret (Kurt) Spruce of Keshena; special
daughter, Theresa Penass; 21 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; his
special little buddies, Sam Bug, Tiny, Nevaeh, Ernie, Shay, Allie, Bert;
and two special granddaughters who cared for Grampa through his final
days, Sam Turtle and Lora Mouse.
Sam is further survived by: four sisters, Eleanor Seppanen of Zeba,
Evelyn Holappa of Zeba, Barbara Mantila of Baraga, Rosemary (Alex)
Haataja of Zeba, and Silver Springs, FL; one brother, Ronald (Betty)
Spruce of Zeba, ; and one sister-in-law, Elda Marie Dickie of Keshena.
Sam was preceded in death by: his wife, Veronica; his son, Rick Nunway;
2 grandchildren, Jacqueline Nunway, Mitchell Richard Peters; his
parents; and 3 brothers, Robert Spruce, Russell Spruce and Kenneth
Spruce.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008 at the St.
Anthony’s Catholic Church in Neopit with the Rev. David Kiefer
officiating. Military Rites were conducted by the Menominee American
Legion Post #497 and the Veterans of the Menominee Nation at the church
following the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery in the
spring. Family and friends called at the Sam Spruce residence located in
Keshena.

Vanessa Joan Gauthier, infant daughter of
Melissa McSawby and Jamie Gauthier went to be an Angel of God on March
8, 2008 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.
She was born on Feb. 13, 2008 in Hancock, MI. Although her time
here was short she brought great joy and was loved very much by her
family.
The short little time she was here with us she was our everything, our
world, our angel. Everyone that met her couldn’t help but to fall in
love, and smiled the moment they saw her. She will always be in our
hearts with us until we see her again.

Erick N. Waisanen
Erick N. Waisanen, of Houghton, died
recently at his home. Erick was born in Iowa City, IA, on Jan. 28, 1955.
He was a graduate of East Lansing High School, Lansing Community
College, and Northern Michigan University.
He worked as a computer systems administrator for the BHK
Child Development Board. His interests included woodworking,
photography, and spending time at the family home on Pt. Abbaye.
Erick was preceded in death by his brother John and his
father, Fred. Surviving him are his mother Helen of Marquette, MI, his
sister Christine Waisanen of Wilmington, DE, and his sister-in-law Susan
Waisanen of Farmington, MI. Also surviving are his niece Ellen Waisanen
of Farmington, his nephews Jeffrey and Erick Katzenstein of
Philadelphia, PA, John Waisanen of Farmington, MI, and Tom Waisanen of
Ann Arbor, MI.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial

Severi Ronald Haataja Jr
Severi Ronald Haataja Jr., age 39 formerly
of Arnheim, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2008 at Emery University
Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.
Severi was born Sept. 18, 1968 in L’Anse, son of Severi and Rose (Anttonen)
Haataja. He graduated from Baraga High School in 1986. After graduation
he went into the US Army for a short time. Severi attended Michigan
Technology University for two years and Columbia University in Missouri
for two years where he was studying engineering. He was working in food
services at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri while attending school. Severi
loved carpentry and remodeling, which he did many side jobs, and also
built his own home. He enjoyed golfing and computers.
Severi married Julie Wescott on March 1, 1995 in Ahmeek, MI. He is
survived by his wife Julie of Richland, MO and her two children Kristie
and William Smith; father Severi Haataja Sr of Arnheim; father-in-law
Roy Wescott of Raleigh, North Carolina and mother-in-law Billie (Paul)
Peterson of Tapiola; two brothers Glenn (Janet) Haataja of Arnheim,
Charles Haataja of Calumet; sister Sherry Belkola of Arnheim; several
aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death is his mother Rose Haataja in 1996.
Visitation was held on Monday, March 3, 2008 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at
the Jacobson Funeral Home. The funeral service followed at 1 p.m. at
Jacobson Funeral Home. Rev. Ted Koehl officiated. A luncheon and
fellowship followed the service in the Sharing Room at the funeral home
and was hosted by the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church Ladies of Chassell.

Michael S. Sayotovich
Michael S. Sayotovich, 96, formerly of
L’Anse, , died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008 at Northshore Health Facility in
Loveland, CO.
Michael was born August 29, 1911 in Osceola, MI, the son of the
late John and Verna (Verbanac) Sayotovich. Michael served in the US Army
from 1942-45. He married the late Mary Simonich in L’Anse, on Feb. 2,
1946. She preceded him in death on Feb. 24, 1998.
Michael worked as a miller/inspector for Tecumseh Die Cast in
Sheboygan Falls, WI before retiring in September of 1977. He was a past
member of Blessed Trinity Parish in Sheboygan Falls and VFW Post 149.
Survivors include one son, Dennis (Debrah H. Snider) Sayotovich of
Fort Collins, CO; one daughter, Kathleen M. (Richard D.) Palmer of
Carlsbad, CA; one grandson, J. T. (Phyllis) Sayotovich; three step
grandchildren, Chance (friend Shannon) Snider, Guy Clay Palmer, and Dawn
Doss; five step great grandchildren, Nathan, Leland, Danny, Dominic, and
Jake; three brothers, Ralph (Betty) of L’Anse, Frank (Margaret), and
Donald, both of Milwaukee; a sister, Rose Tessmer of Baraga; a
sister-in-law, Irene Sayotovich of L’Anse, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; three brothers and two
sisters.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, March 11, 2008
at noon at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in L’Anse, with the
Rev. Augustin George, as celebrant. Burial will take place at Evergreen
Cemetery in L’Anse.

L’Anse on Tuesday, March 11, from 11 a.m. until the time of the Mass at

Gerald C. Moilanen
Gerald C. Moilanen, 66, of Leesburg FL,
passed away suddenly on Friday, Feb. 15, 2008.
Born in L’Anse, he moved to Leesburg with his wife Brenda in April
2007. Jerry served in the US Navy during the Vietnam era. He retired in
1996 as a Technician from Xerox, after 33 years. Jerry was a member of
the Fraternal Order of Eagles, and was Past State President of Utah in
the Eagles. He was also the Commander of the American Legion in L’Anse,
and a member of the Amvets. Jerry and Brenda were married for 25 Years.
Together they had seven children and nine granddaughters. Sons are Steve
(Denise) of Troy, MI, Bruce (Suzanne) of Aramda MI, Vernon (Michele)
Wilson of Clarkson MI, Victor Vanderberg of Woodstock, GA. Daughters
Catherine (Marianne) of Commerce Township, MI, Theresa (Randy) Schroeder
of Escanaba, MI, Yvonne (Kendall) Moilanen of Daly City, CA. There will
be a service for Jerry in L’Anse at a later time this year. The family
will notify L’Anse of time and date of that service.
Rhoda Whaley
Rhoda Whaley, age 78 of L’Anse passed away
on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008 at Bayside Village in L’Anse.
She was born March 5, 1929 in L’Anse, daughter of William and Flora
(Johnson) Lundberg. Rhoda graduated from L’Anse High School in 1947.
After high school she worked at the courthouse as a secretary and then
moved to Racine, WI where she worked as a telephone operator for a few
years. She married Robert on Sept. 29, 1951 at the First Lutheran Church
in L’Anse.
Rhoda was a very active member in the United Lutheran Church in
L’Anse. She was the former Superintendent of Sunday school, church
council member, Sunday school and Confirmation teacher, assistant
Minister, and church circle member. Rhoda was a former member of the
Green Hill Manor Housing Commission for several years. She enjoyed
sports and was an avid golfer and member of the L’Anse Golf Club and
Ladies Golf League, horse shoe player and former League President,
bowling and member of 600 club. Rhoda was a life member of the American
Legion Post 144 Auxiliary.
Surviving are her husband Robert of L’Anse; daughters Therese Ellen
(John) Korpi of Ishpeming, Sandra Whaley of L’Anse; granddaughter
Heather (Paul) Perry of Aura; three great grandchildren Josh Johnson,
Seth and Jenna Perry; many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents; son Robert Whaley in 1973;
and sister Fern Roy.
The funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 4, 2008 at the
United Lutheran Church in L’Anse.
Visitation was from 11 a.m. until the time of service at the

Aloysius LaCasse
Aloysius LaCasse, age 90, of Macomb, MI ,
formerly of L’Anse, died on Jan. 15, 2008.
He graduated from L’Anse High School in 1935. He served in the US
Air Force during World War II and since that time has lived in the
Detroit area.
He is survived by his wife, Carol, who followed him in death on
Jan. 23, 2008; sons James, Larry, Charles and Thomas; two grandchildren;
brother Edward LaCasse, and sister Dorothy Hofbauer.
He was predeceased by his son Robert, and parents August and Rose
LaCasse.
Services for Mr. and Mrs. LaCasse were held on Jan. 26, 2008 in New
Baltimore, MI.
Eugene Ott
Eugene Ott, age 76, of Skanee, MI, and
formerly of West Olive, MI, passed away Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008, at
Marquette General Hospital in Marquette, MI. He was born Feb. 3, 1932,
in Grand Haven to Julius and Emilie (Bethke) Ott, and he married the
former Julia Warner on Oct. 22, 1955, in Grand Haven. She preceded him
in death on April 20, 2000. He was preceded in death by a son, Steven,
on July 25, 1998. Two brothers, Ralph Ott and William Ott, also preceded
him in death.
Mr. Ott lived most of his life in the Tri-Cities area and had been
employed as an electrician for Whittaker Electric and the Grand Haven
Board of Light and Power where he designed and built the “Christmas
Star” which is still in use today. He served his country in the US Air
Force during the Korean War and was a former member of the American
Legion Post #28 in Grand Haven as well as a former member of St. John’s
Lutheran Church.
Eugene was instrumental in starting the Baraga County Snowdrifters
Club and was a dedicated member. He was also a member of the Skanee
Wilderness Riders or the self-named “Over-the-Hill Four-Wheeler Gang.”
One of his many hobbies was woodworking and cabinet-making. He received
much joy out of feeding and watching the birds year-round. He was the
light of his grandchildren’s lives, and he will be greatly missed by
all.
Survivors include two daughters, Sandra (Kurt) Myers of Freesoil
and Karen (Bruce) Marshall of West Olive; a son, Richard (Rose) Ott of
Canby, Oregon; thirteen grandchildren: Jacob, Isaac, Meghan, Jennifer,
Troy, Nathaniel, Joseph, Benjamin, Hope, Kevin, Stephanie, Tyler, and
Emilie; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Ervin (Shirlie) Ott of
Skanee. He also leaves behind many wonderful friends in the Baraga
County area.
The service for Eugene was held at noon on Monday, March 3, 2008,
at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Grand Haven.
Military honors were provided by the American Legion Post #28 Honor
Guard. Interment will be in Lakeshore Cemetery, Grand Haven. Memorials

Brian Lokers, age 54 of L’Anse passed away

He was born March 7, 1953 in Douglas, MI son of James and Doreen
(Skinner) Lokers. Brian graduated from L’Anse High School. He married
Brenda Miron on Nov. 28, 1987 in Baraga. Brian worked at Bayside Village
doing maintenance for the past 17 years. He liked working on computers,
loved animals, and enjoyed spending time with his family.
Surviving are his wife Brenda of L’Anse; father James of Holland,
MI; sons Bruce Lokers of Raleigh NC, Michael Miron of Independence, MO,
David (Lisa) Brunk of Madison Heights, MI, Leon (Heather) Brunk of
L’Anse, Nicholas Lokers of L’Anse, Steven Lokers of L’Anse; daughter Amy
Lokers of South Haven, MI; brothers Brad (Kathy) Lokers of California,
James Kauthen of California; grandsons Tyler, TC, Evan, Devon, and
Damon; and granddaughter Kylie.
He is preceded in death by his mother Doreen; brother Bruce Lokers;
and sister LeAnna Van Kley.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 6, 2008 at 1
p.m. at the Jacobson Funeral Home. Visitation will be one hour prior to
the service. Rev. Scott Williams will officiate.

Wava (Ferraro) Esch
Wava (Ferraro) Esch, age 88, died
peacefully in her sleep on Feb. 24, 2008 at the Northern Lights Health
Care Center in Washburn, WI. She was born April 4, 1919 in Gladstone, MI
the daughter of William & Clara (Bosley) Moran.
She married Joseph A. Ferraro in 1940. They resided in Lyons, IL
until 1968 when they moved to Fort Myers, FL. Her husband Joseph passed
away in 1985. She married Theodore Esch, formerly of Lake Leland, MI in
1987. Wava received several awards from the Catholic Church for her work
with the elderly. She was also an active member of the Echo Project
which provided agricultural advice to developing countries. For twenty
years, each summer and fall, she would travel from Florida to Bayfield,
WI to help out at the family orchard. She loved greeting the people,
selling apples and making her award winning apple pies.
She is survived by a daughter, Joann Seneca of Peoria, IL and a son
Bill (Claudia) Ferraro of Bayfield, WI, five grandchildren and six
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husbands Joseph A. Ferraro and
Theodore Esch and a grandson Joseph W. Ferraro.
A Mass and memorial service are planned for spring in L’Anse, MI.

Mary O. Disney
Mary O. Disney, age 75, passed away Monday,
March 3, 2008 at her residence in Covington following an illness of
several months. She was born in Ironton, Ohio on June 19, 1932 the
daughter of the late Lee A. and Mabel Moore. Mary married Thomas E.
Disney in Toledo, Ohio on Dec. 25, 1955. They moved to Covington in
1991. Together they operated Disney Bait and Tackle in Baraga. She
enjoyed gambling, fishing and spending time with her dog.
Mrs. Disney is survived by her loving husband, Tom, daughters,
Cheryl Mae O'Barr of Melvindale, MI. and Debry L. (Donnie) Paquette of
Covington, nine grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. Numerous
nieces, nephews and other family members also survive. She was preceded
in death by her son, Edward in 2002, two brothers, and two sisters.
Funeral services for Mrs. Disney will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday,
March 6, 2008 from the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse with
Elder Donald Petoskey officiating. Spring interment will take place in
the Baraga Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 5, 2008 from 6
until 8 p.m. at the funeral chapel and for one hour prior to the service
on Thursday. Following the service, the family invites friends to join
them for fellowship and luncheon in the Harrington Gathering room,
located at the funeral home.

Mary Lorraine Dodson
Mary Lorraine Dodson died in Danville,
California, on Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008, following a lengthy illness. The
daughter of Clara and Joseph Archambeau, she was born on June 5, 1914.
Lorraine was a graduate of L'Anse High School and the Saint Agnes
School of Nursing in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.
She retired from Stanford Research Institute in Menlo Park,
California, returning to L'Anse to care for her mother. During that time
she was a member of the Sacred Heart parish.
Throughout her life she loved art and painted in oils.
She is survived by sisters Merle C. Zychowski of Fairlawn, Ohio, and
Shirley A. MacDowell of Naples, Florida, and step-son Gary S. Dodson of
Alamo, California, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Gary P. Steen
Gary P. Steen, age 73, of L'Anse, passed
away Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008 at Marquette General Hospital. He had been
a patient there for 2 days. Gary was born March 20, 1934 in Detroit, MI,
the son of the late Joseph T. and Margaret H. (Cardwell) Steen. He
graduated from Dearborn High School in 1952. Gary served in the U.S.
Army during the Korean War and following his discharge, went to work for
the Ford Motor Company. At his retirement, he was the central check
writer for payroll world wide. Gary was a member of United Methodist
Church, L'Anse. He enjoyed golfing and cooking.
Mr. Steen is survived by his children, Stephen Steen of Dearborn,
MI., Joseph (Susan) Steen of Peck, MI., and Lisa (Mitch) McKie of
Sarasota, FL., and six grandchildren. His special friend, Lila also
survives. He was preceded in death by one brother.
A memorial service for Mr. Steen will be held at a later date. The
family has entrusted the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse with
arrangements.
Dorothy E. Bergeron
Dorothy E. Bergeron, age 97, of Keweenaw
Bay passed away Monday, Feb. 18, 2008 at Bayside Village. She was born
in Keweenaw Bay on Jan. 17, 1911, the daughter of the late Edmund and
Edna (Teahen) Aubin. Dorothy attended school in Baraga.
She married Theodore Bergeron in Assinins on Aug. 20, 1928. He
preceded her in death on Jan. 18, 1975. Dorothy was a member of Holy
Name of Jesus Church and the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community.
Mrs. Bergeron is survived by her loving children, Floyd (Helena)
Bergeron and Alyce Bergeron both of Keweenaw Bay, 10 grandchildren, 17
great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren. Several nieces
and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her two sisters.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at noon on Thursday, Feb.
21, 2008 from St. Ann's Catholic Church, Baraga with Father George Maki,
celebrant. Spring interment will take place in the Assinins Cemetery.
The family received friends at the church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until
time of the Mass.
Carl E. Nurmi
Carl E. Nurmi, age 62, of Watton passed
away Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008 at St. Vincent's Hospital in Green Bay, WI.
He was born on July 10, 1945 in Bruce Crossing, the son of Emil and
Mayme (Hiitola) Nurmi. Carl attended school in Painsville. He worked at
CCI in the maintenance department. Carl married the former Barbara Torma
in Marquette on June 11, 1966. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran
Church, Covington, and had been a fireman and former fire chief for the
Covington Fire Department. Carl was an excellent auto mechanic, was a
Green Bay Packer fan, enjoyed hunting, fishing, and baseball. He was a
gifted guitar player, and enjoyed dancing. His greatest joy were his
grandchildren.
Mr. Nurmi is survived by his loving wife, Barbara, children, Amy
(Dennis) McCarthy of Nashville, IN., Peggy (Donald) Grosso of Watersmeet,
MI., and Elizabeth (Ron) Risku of Watton, six grandchildren, Cheyanne,
Shaun, Paige, Dylan, Katelyn, and Bodey, mother, Mayme Nurmi of Bruce
Crossing, brothers, George, Roy, and Michael Nurmi all of Bruce
Crossing, sister, Edith (Bill) Newby of Maryville, TN., uncle Bert (Ruth
Ann) Nurmi, nieces, and nephews, Laura, Peter, Elijah, Steven, Jennifer,
and Brandy, sisters-in-law, Mary Gibson and Lorraine Anderson, and other
relatives. He was preceded in death by his father, Emil.
Funeral services for Mr. Nurmi were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb.
22, 2008 from Trinity Lutheran Church, Covington with Pastor Mark
Reinsch officiating. Spring interment will take place in the Covington
Cemetery. The family greeted friends on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2008 from 6
until 8 p.m. at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse and for one
hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.
Ardell Marshall Lobeck
Ardell Marshall Lobeck, 82, of Ontonagon,
passed away Sunday, Feb. 24, 2008 at his home.
He was born Mar. 17, 1925 in Chicago, IL to the late Joseph and
Alice Lobeck. Ardell served in the United States Army during World War
II. On Nov. 24, 1944 he married the former Anna Irene Daniels in New
York just before shipping over seas. Together they raised six children
and helped to raise three grandchildren.
Ardell worked at the White Pine Copper Mine as an underground
foreman. He played Santa Claus for many years, was an active member of
the VFW, Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star. For several years, during his
retirement, he drove many people to doctors appointments as a volunteer
driver.
Ardell is survived by his wife Anna Irene Lobeck, six children,
Allan (Dana)Lobeck of Houston, TX, Joseph Lobeck of Ontonagon, MI,
Marsha (John) Fritzinger of Atlanta, GA, Janet (Calvin Kostamo) Raymond
of Pelkie, MI, Janice Ambrose of Hermitage, TN, and Pat (Linda) Lobeck
of Kingsford, MI, grandchildren Allaina, Tristine, Jimmy, Shelly, Joe,
Billie Jean, Ryan and Matt Lobeck, Nick, Rebecca, KT-Jo (Jason) and
Amanda Fritzinger, Jennifer (Robert) Hancock, Johnathan Raymond and
Randall & Tony Ambrose, 10 great grandchildren, former daughter-in-law
and very special friend Linda Ross-Delph and sister Vera Szopinski.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son George, and
sister Alice Erdman.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Feb. 28 at the Siloa Lutheran
Church in Ontonagon from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will take place
Friday, Feb. 29 at the church at 3 p.m. with Pastor Penny Olson

Viena Kauranen
Viena Kauranen, age 91 of Watton, passed
away on Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital
Skilled Nursing Unit.
She was born Feb. 16, 1916 in Watton, daughter of the late Jacob
and Susanna (Ketola) Korpi. Viena married Jalmer on July 30, 1938 in
Ishpeming. He preceded her in death on Dec. 20, 1980. She was a member
of Trinity Lutheran Church in Covington, the church Women’s League and
church choir. Viena enjoyed both vegetable and flower gardening,
knitting and loved her cows and life on the farm.
Surviving are three sons Melvin (Carol) Kauranen of Covington,
Rudolph (Elizabeth) Kauranen of Watton, David (Karen) Kauranen of Watton;
three daughters Gloria (Donald) Baril of L’Anse, Elsa (Albert “Bud”)
Clement of L’Anse, Elizabeth (Ralph) Bischof of Watton; 16
grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and
two great-great grandchildren.
Preceding her in death are her parents; four brothers Ero, Hugo,
Arne, and Eino Korpi; two sisters Lillian Friberg and Sadie Smith; and
one grandson Donald Baril and one great grandson, Jason Lindemann.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, Feb. 17, 2008 from 6 to 8 p.m.
at the Jacobson Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held on
Monday, Feb. 18, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in
Covington with visitation one hour prior to service. Pastor Mark Reinsch
will officiate. Burial will be in the Covington Cemetery in the spring.

Joan Marie Chagnon
Joan Marie Chagnon, 69, of 736 E. "C" St.
Iron Mountain, MI died peacefully at home on Sunday, Feb. 17, 2008. She
was born Feb. 5, 1939 in Ironwood, MI, daughter of Ellen (Swanson)
Sertich and the late Emil Sertich. Joan lived in L'Anse and Baraga for
most of her life, and had lived with her daughter in Iron Mountain for
the past few years. She loved to crochet and had made many beautiful
creations. Joan was also known for being an excellent cook.
She is survived by two daughters, Jean Haanpaa of Iron Mountain and
Jo Ellen (Charlie) Webb of Covington. Her mother, Ellen Czerneski of
Hurley, WI, three brothers, Bob (Ginny) Sertich of Racine, WI, Mike
(Cookie) Czerneski of Ironwood, and David (Patty) Czerneski of Ironwood,
a brother-in-law, Gary Kusz of Ironwood, ten grandchildren, Kenny "Skip"
Brown, Jeremy Brown, Jerry Lancour, Eric Haanpaa, Amelia Haanpaa, Robert
Haanpaa, Scott Haanpaa, Emily Rose, Jessica Webb and Laura Webb; and six
great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jody Brown, an infant twin
sister, Jean Ann Sertich and her sister Cathy Kusz, and. by her special
friend, Roger Chagnon.

& Nash Funeral Home. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. at the

Paul J. Van Abel
Paul J. Van Abel, age 89, of L'Anse, passed
away Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital following
a lengthy illness. He was born on Jan. 21, 1919 in Pequaming, the son of
the late Cyril and Dora (Anderson) Van Abel. Paul attended school at
Henry Ford High School and graduated in 1938. He served in the C.C.
Corp., the National Guard. In October of 1940, he served with the 107th
Combat Engineers and was a member of the US Army during WWII in the
European Theater until June of 1945. Paul married Aileen Scott in
Ireland in December of 1942. She preceded him in death in 1999. Paul had
been employed at Celotex Corporation and retired with over 20 years of
service in 1985. He was a member of the United Lutheran Church, L'Anse.
Paul was a 50-year member of the American Legion Post 144 in L'Anse.
Mr. Van Abel is survived by his loving son, John Van Abel and
partner Peggy Maatta, grandchildren, Maureen Van Abel, Ryan Van Abel,
Adam Van Abel, Ana Vuk, Erin McConnell, April and Shannon Van Abel, six
great grandchildren, daughter-in-law, Kristin Van Abel, son-in-law, John
Vuk and special friend and companion, Dorothy Hofbauer. He was preceded
in death by his son David, daughter, Colleen and grandson, Scott,
brother Mark and sisters Dorothy and Grace.

Harriet L. Tollefson
Harriet L. Tollefson, age 88, of L'Anse,
passed away Saturday Feb. 9, 2008 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital a
day after admission. She was born in Pequaming, on Jan. 17, 1920 the
daughter of the late William and Rose (Carlson) Johnson. Harriet
attended school in Pequaming and graduated from Baraga High School. She
married Arne Tollefson on Feb. 25, 1939 in L'Anse. Together they
operated a dairy farm starting in 1947. After his death on Feb. 23, 1973
she continued to maintain the farm until she retired in 1987. Harriet
was a member of United Lutheran Church in L'Anse. She enjoyed her
flowers, gardening, playing piano, sewing, baking, farming, and spending
time with her grandchildren who looked forward to playing and working on
the farm.
Mrs. Tollefson is survived by her loving son, James (Susie)
Tollefson of L'Anse, grandchildren, Jimbo (Susie) Tollefson, Bridget
(Jeff) Collins, Debbie (Dave) Mulari, and Kathleen (Jay) LeClaire, great
grandchildren, Jim, Jeffrey, Amber, Ashley, Chelsey, Erika, and
Kathleen. Several nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in
death by her brothers, Wilbur, Alfred and Grant, and sisters, Barbara,
and Lorraine.
Family services for Mrs. Tollefson were held, and spring interment

Herbert L. Kelley
Herbert L. Kelley, age 89, a former
resident of Norton Shores, MI, and presently a resident of the Bluffs
Senior Living Community in Houghton, passed away Friday evening Feb. 8,
2008, at the Omega House in Houghton shortly after being admitted.
Mr. Kelley was born on Dec. 12, 1918, in Muskegon Heights, MI, a
son of the late Lyle and Nellie (Riddle) Kelley. He graduated from the
Muskegon Heights High School. Mr. Kelley was a life long resident of the
Muskegon area until moving to Houghton in April of 2007.
He was a veteran having served with the United States Army Air Corp
during World War II, as a B-29 pilot, where he flew 30 missions over
Tokyo; receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross. On Sept. 14, 1944, he
was united in marriage to the former Wava Kathleen Page at Salina, KS.
Herbert was a devoted husband who cared for his wife for the last 30
years of their 56-year marriage after an accident left her wheelchair
bound.
Mr. Kelley had been a partner in Muskegon Tile & Floor Covering in
Muskegon until his retirement in 1980. Herbert's love of flying began
when he received his pilot's license at the age of 16. Herbert flew five
of his own home-built airplanes and was a charter member of Chapter 211
of the Experimental Aircraft Association at Grand Haven, MI. Countless
hours were spent working on his airplane projects in his garage at his
Little Black Lake home.
Preceding him in death where his wife, parents, and one brother,
Donald.
Surviving are: his son Thomas (Ruth) Kelley of Pelkie, his
granddaughter Jennifer (Mike) Mattson of Greenville, WI, his sister:
Norma Goetsch of Grand Rapids, MI, several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Private services for Herbert will be held later this spring at the
Mona View Cemetery of Muskegon Heights, MI.

Julia M. Maki
Julia M. Maki, 88, of Watton, passed
away on Monday, Feb. 11, 2008 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital's
Skilled Nursing Unit where she was a resident since 2002. She was born
Aug. 18, 1919 in Watton, daughter of the late Matti and Ida (Huhtala)
Laturi. Julia married Toivo "Dave" Maki in 1940. He preceded her in
death in 1972. She was employed at the Covington Rest Home for 24 years,
retiring in 1991. Julia was a member of the Independent Apostolic
Lutheran Church. She enjoyed reading, baking and making homemade
carpets, but most of all being with her family, grandchildren and
friends. Julia will always be remembered by her smile and kindness to
everyone.
Mrs. Maki is survived by her four sons, David (Laurice) Maki of
Sturtevant, WI, Clyde (Sandy) Maki of Plainfield, IL, Robert Maki and
Gerald Maki of Watton, four daughters, Leona (Stuart) Delene of Watton,
Shirley (Mike) Howard of Arvada, CO, Judy (Dennis) Timm of Sarasota, FL,
and Karen (Greg) Lazzari of Watton, 13 grandchildren, Tim (Fabi) Maki
and Yvette (Gary) Modlish, Scott, John (Angela Wilson), James (Julie)
and Thomas (Jennifer) Delene, Michael Maki and Jennifer (Josh) Wagner,
Ann (Jason) Blake and John (Andree Tanner) Syvertson, Michelle, Michael
and Christina Lazzari, 14 great-grandchildren, sister, Aili (Eilene)
Serresseque of West Bloomfield, MI, and sister-in-law, Vera Maki of
Watton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Toivo, Arvid, Arnie,
Hemmi, Eli, and Rufus Laturi, and sisters, Tyyne Besonen and Laina Maki.

Sharon Joanne Campbell
Sharon Joanne Campbell, age 55, of Cape
Coral, FL, passed away on Jan. 27, 2008. She had fought a courageous
battle with cancer. She was born in Perryvale/London, England on June
21, 1952, the daughter of Sam and Marion Campbell. Her father was in the
Air Force, and the family moved many times. Sharon graduated from high
school in Lincoln, Nebraska. After moving to Cape Coral, Sharon was
involved in Early Special Development and touched the lives of her
students, their parents, and fellow teachers. She had taught at several
elementary schools in the Cape Coral/Fort Myers area, most recently at
J. Collin English Elementary School in Cape Coral, FL.
She is survived by her brother, Robert of Ypsilanti, MI, her aunt
Susan (Karl) Presslein of L'Anse, MI her uncle Frank (Lis) Campbell of
Grand Rapids, MI. She is also survived by cousins Stefan, Heidi, Mark,
Mai Britt, Trudi, Erich and their families, her step-mother Mary
Campbell of Bowling Green, KY, as well as other extended family and
friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, and grandparents F.
Clyde and Mae E. Campbell.
A celebration of life will be held on Feb. 15, 2008 at J. Collin
English Elementary. A committal service will be held in L'Anse in the
spring.

Verna E. Drummond
Verna E. Drummond, age 91, of Aura,
passed away suddenly Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2008 at Summit Medical Center in
Frisco, Colorado. She was born on Aug. 8, 1916 the daughter of the late
John E. and Ida M. (Palosaari) Heltunen. Verna attended school in Aura
and graduated from L'Anse High School in 1934. She worked in Detroit for
a paint manufacturing company as a secretary, then moved back to Aura.
On Apr. 26, 1946 she married Earl N. Drummond. He preceded her in death
on Sept. 3, 1981. Verna was a member of the First Apostolic Lutheran
Church, Houghton and the Aura Fire Department Auxiliary.
Mrs. Drummond is survived by her loving children, David Drummond of
Tennessee, Paul Drummond of Idaho, Susan (Bob) Drummond of Canton, MI,
Barbara (Peter) Kilpela of Atlantic Mine, and Mary (Brad) Dickerson of

Elna M. Tarvainen
Elna M. Tarvainen, 93, of L'Anse
passed away Thursday, Jan. 24, 2008 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital's
Skilled Nursing Unit following a lengthy illness.
She was born in Watton, on Apr. 21, 1914 the daughter of the
late William and Silja (Nurkkala) Salli. She attended school in Watton
and graduated from Baraga High School. Elna married August Tarvainen in
Calumet on July 20, 1935. He preceded her in death in 1992. She worked
as a grocery clerk in her younger days, and then as bookkeeper for the
Covington Rest Home. Elna was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She
was former Covington Township Clerk. Elna enjoyed reading, crossword
puzzles, knitting, doing handiwork, and spending time with her
grandchildren.
Mrs. Tarvainen is survived by her loving children, Russell
(Arlene) Tarvainen of Watton, Rodney (Gail) Tarvainen of Covington, six
grandchildren, Kristian, Rebecca, Beth, Rodney, Jon, and Terry, 10 great
grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, and sister, Elvie Pitcher
of Livonia. Numerous nieces nephews, and cousins also survive. She was
preceded in death by two sisters, and three grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mrs. Tarvainen were held at 4 p.m.
Monday, Jan. 28, 2008 at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Covington with
Pastor Mark Reinsch officiating. Spring interment will take place in the
Covington Cemetery. The family received friends on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2008
from 5 until 7 p.m. at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse and
at the church on Monday for one hour prior to the funeral service.

Dean C. Bonney
Dean C. Bonney, age 55 of Alston,
passed away on Monday, Jan. 28, 2008 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.
He was born June 20, 1952 in Pontiac, Michigan, son of Donn
and Lillian Ellen (Hiltunen) Bonney. Dean graduated from Waterford
Kettering High School in 1970. He worked for GMC Truck and Bus for 30
years. Upon retiring in 2003 he moved to Alston. Dean was a member of
the Ottawa Sportsman Club. He loved hunting, fishing, and gardening.
Surviving are his father Donn Bonney of Pelkie, life partner
Debbie (Sleep) Wanhainen of Alston, brothers Donn (Emy)
Bonney of Sebu City, Philippines, Bruce Bonney of Waterford,
MI, and Adrianne L. LeMieux of Tempe, AZ whom Dean raised like a
daughter.
He is preceded in death by his mother Lillian Ellen Bonney in
2001.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at
the Jacobson Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. at the
funeral home. Rev. John Autio will officiate.

John E. Phillippi
John E. Phillippi, age 81 of Pelkie, passed
away on Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2008 at Bayside Village in L’Anse.
John was born May 29, 1926 in Alston, son of Matthew and Maude
(Wagner) Phillippi. He attended the old Alston School. On Aug. 10, 1944
John went into the US Navy serving in WWII until 1946. On Oct. 26, 1951
John went into the US Air Force when he served in Korea and Vietnam;
until May 1, 1970 when he moved to Montana. He married Senu “Sally”
Horma Kemppainen on June 26, 1976 in Columbia Falls, Montana. In 1985
they moved back to Pelkie. He was a member of the Alston VFW Post 7646.
John loved to travel.
Surviving are his wife Sally; step son Dennis (Linda) Kemppainen of
Lynchburg, VA; two step grandsons Derek and Wally Kemppainen; step great
grandson Austin Kemppainen; nephews Jim Hiltunen of Alston, Jack (Judy)
Hiltunen of Ft. Worth,TX, Michael Hiltunen of Little Chute, WI, Peter
(Judy) Hiltunen of Ishpeming; nieces Lois Clarey of Utica, MI, Pat Boyd
of Caledonia, WI; numerous nieces, nephews, and special friends.
Preceding him in death are his parents; brother James Phillippi;
sisters Kathleen Hiltunen and Marion Kerrigan.
The funeral services were held on Saturday, Jan. 19, at 11 a.m. at
the Jacobson Funeral Home. Rev. John Autio officiated. Visitation will
be one hour prior to the service. The Baraga County area veterans will
conduct military rites at 10:30 a.m. under the direction of the American
Legion Post 144. Burial will be in the spring in the Nisula Cemetery. A
luncheon and fellowship will be held at the Alston VFW Post 7646

Margaret Clara St. Onge
Margaret Clara St. Onge, age 82, of
L'Anse, passed away Thursday evening Jan. 17, 2008 at Bayside Village in
L'Anse. She had been a resident there for two weeks. Margaret was born
in L'Anse on Nov. 1, 1925 the daughter of the late Peter and Lena (Tollefson)
Clyne. She graduated from L'Anse High School. Margaret married Willard
St. Onge in 1945. He preceded her in death in 2002. She was a member of
United Lutheran Church, L'Anse. Margaret enjoyed bowling, cooking and
playing cards.
Mrs. St. Onge is survived by her loving sister, Virginia Hiltunen,
granddaughter Cheryl St. Onge, nieces, Susan Hanson, and Gail Herrala,
and nephew, Paul Hiltunen. Other family members and friends also
survive. She was preceded in death by her sons, Kevin, Roger, and Gary.

Joseph Robert Miron
Joseph Robert Miron, of Long Beach,
CA and formerly of Saginaw. Joseph Robert Miron (adult nickname, Joe;
childhood nickname, Jody), age 45, passed away of heart disease on Dec.
16, 2007 at his home in Long Beach, CA.
Joe was born in Saginaw, MI on Nov. 30, 1962, the son of Joe and
Mary Miron of Honor, MI and Ft. Myers, FL. In his early years, Joe lived
on Weiss Street in Saginaw Township. In 1976, his parents moved to Dice
Road in Hemlock, where Joe graduated from Hemlock High School in 1981.
Joe then went to Ohio to attend computer school, after which he returned
to Saginaw to work for UHaul. In 1986, Joe decided to leave Michigan and
make his home in Long Beach, CA, spending over 20 years working for the
Marriott Hotel in Long Beach.
He is survived by his parents, Joe and Mary Miron of Honor, MI;
half-brother, Russell (Barb) Beyer of Freeland, MI; sister, Michelle
Watters of Midland, MI; nieces, Shannon Watters, Cortney Watters, and
Jordan Beyer of Midland and Freeland; and an uncle, Jack (Jeannette)
Feeheley of Frankfort, MI; numerous cousins and extended family. He is
preceded in death by two uncles: William (Sue) Feeheley of Algonac, MI
and his uncle Dr. Robert (Vi) Feeheley of Saginaw, MI.
A memorial service in Saginaw will be held in May for Joe at a time
and place to be determined later.

LaVonne "Pudgy" Johnson
LaVonne "Pudgy" Johnson, age 58 of Kenton, passed away
on Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2008 at her home. She was born on April 15, 1949 in
Stambaugh, daughter of the late Leonard and Irene (Westdahl) Johnson and
graduated form Iron River High School. She was married to Thomas Johnson
on Dec. 14, 1968 in Iron River. "Pudgy" was a devoted homemaker and a
member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Trout Creek. She also worked
part time at Hoppi's In Kenton.
Survivors include her husband Tom, a daughter; Teri (Brian) Aho of
Fenton, MI, two sons; Tony and TJ, both of Kenton, three grandchildren;
Erick, Caitlin and Paige, a sister; Cindy (Stanley) Dictorovich of
Gaastra, a brother; Danny (Linda) Johnson of Stambaugh and numerous
nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister Arlette and a
brother Bernie.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. EST on Saturday, Jan. 19,
2008 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Trout Creek with the Rev. Marlin
Snyder officiating. Interment will be in Kenton Cemetery. Visitation
will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. EST on Friday at the Wandersee
Funeral Home in Bruce Crossing and at the church, for an hour before the
service on Saturday.

Milena Joshi, of Vienna, VA, passed
away on Jan. 3, 2008, at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital.
Milena was born in Harbin, China and was the loving daughter
of the late Michael and Helen Avdalovich.

Violet Ida Johanna “Vi” Jokipii
Violet Ida Johanna “Vi” Jokipii, age 77, of
L'Anse passed away Monday, Jan. 14, 2008 at Bayside Village, L'Anse. She
was born in Toivola, on Oct. 8, 1930 the youngest child of the late
Nestor and Anna (Autio) Maki.
She attended school in Misery Bay and graduated from Jeffers High
School in 1950. She married Paul Gordon Jokipii on June 5, 1954 in
Toivola. They were together for 50 years until Gordon passed away Sept.
9, 2004.
Vi was employed in Detroit as a bank teller and drapery maker at
Castelman's and in L'Anse as a ward clerk at Baraga County Memorial
Hospital. She was a member of Grace Free Lutheran Church in Pelkie.
Among Vi's many talents were oil painting and wedding cake decorating.
She currently enjoyed crocheting, attending church services, spending
time with her family and friends, and playing bingo to win prizes for
her grandchildren whom she was very proud of. Vi was a very caring
person who often put the feelings and needs of others before her own. Vi
had a strong belief in God and although she will be sadly missed, she is
finally at peace by his side.
Mrs. Jokipii is survived by her loving children, Susan (Roger)
Copley of L'Anse, and Kevin (Marie) Jokipii of Centerline, MI, four
grandchildren, Acacia and Kaila Copley of L'Anse, and Annabelle and
Samuel Jokipii of Centerline, MI., one sister, Evelyn (Stuart) Olson of
Misery Bay and two sisters-in-law, Sylvia Jacoby and Elida Jokipii both
of L'Anse. Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive. She was
preceded in death by her brothers, Herman and Edwin and sisters, Helen,
Bertha, Edna, and Julia.

Jan. 18, 2008 from Grace Free Lutheran Church, Pelkie with Pastor Dean
Franz officiating. Spring interment will take place in the Pelkie

F.M. “Captain Mike” Saarinen
F.M. “Captain Mike” Saarinen, age 89,
of L'Anse passed away suddenly on Monday, Jan. 14, 2008 at his
residence. He was born in Conneaut, Ohio on March 24, 1918 the son of
the late Frank and Milja (Haapala) Saarinen. Mike attended school in
Ashtabula, Ohio and graduated in 1936. He married the former Charlotte
Auger in L'Anse on Dec. 28, 1946. She preceded him in death in 1998.
Mike served in the US Coast Guard. He sailed the Great Lakes for 46
years, working his way up to boat captain, retiring in 1982. Mike was a
member of the L'Anse United Methodist Church, and a life member of the
L'Anse Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed reading, carpentry, watching
basketball, was an avid boat memorabilia collector, and a fan of the
Cleveland Browns and Indians. Because of his boating experiences he kept
up to date on the weather forecasts. He will be fondly remembered as a
quiet and peaceful man.
Mr. Saarinen is survived by his loving sons, David (Karen)
Saarinen of Ashland, WI., Bill (Corie) Saarinen of L'Anse, and John
Saarinen of L'Anse, and grandchildren, Michael, and Katie.
A memorial service for Mr. Saarinen will be held at 3 p.m. Friday,
Jan. 18, 2008 from the L'Anse United Methodist Church with Pastor John
Henry officiating. Interment will take place in the L'Anse Evergreen
Cemetery. A Masonic Service, conducted by the L'Anse Masonic Lodge will
be held at 2:30 p.m. The family will greet friends at the church on

Walter W. "Punk" Des Laurier
Walter W. "Punk" Des Laurier, 82, of
Aura, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2008 at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester,
MN. Following a brief illness. He was born in Pequaming, MI. on Oct. 21,
1925 the son of the late Walter and Mildred (Pettersen) DesLaurier.
Walter attended school in L'Anse and proudly graduated in 2004. He
served his country in the United States Navy during WWII. Walter worked
at Celotex for 13 years, he was then employed as a sawyer in the logging
industry, retiring in 1984. Walter married the former Ruth Salo on Nov.
12, 1949 and she preceded him in death in April of 2002. On July 3, 2004
Walter married Barbara (Nakkula) Mars. He was a member of the L'Anse VFW
Post #3897. Walter enjoyed mowing the lawn, raising farm animals, deer
hunting, working in his vegetable garden, watching the Green Bay
Packers, and playing with his dog "Rags." His greatest joy was spending
time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Mr. DesLaurier is survived by his loving wife, Barbara,
children, Mary (Robert) Chenoweth of Aura, Jerry (Lisa) DesLaurier of
Aura, David and Birgit of L'Anse, Christa (Rusty) of Calumet, and
Michael (Kathy) of L'Anse, grandchildren, Rob, Kerry, Kimberly (Dave),
Ryan, Stephanie (Ray), Jonathon, James, Sarah, Jeffery, and Devan,
great-grandchildren, Ashley, Brian, and Madison, and sister, Isabelle
(Carlo) Heikkinen of Pequaming. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins
also survive.

Elizabeth J. “Betty Jean” Garcia
Elizabeth J. “Betty Jean” Garcia, age
66, of Baraga passed away Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008 at her residence
following a lengthy illness. She was born in L'Anse on July 12, 1941 the
daughter of the late Joseph and Grace (Genshaw) Magnant. Betty Jean
attended school in Baraga. She was a member of the Keweenaw Bay Indian
Community and the Ojibwa Senior Citizens. Betty Jean enjoyed going to
bingo, cooking and playing on the computer.
Betty Jean is survived by her loving brother and sister, Gary
Magnant of Baraga, and Linda (Donald) Messer of Baraga. Also surviving
are numerous nephews, nieces, grandnieces, grandnephews, and special
cousins, Tut and Bev Mayo and Popcorn (Scott) Mayo. She was preceded in
death by her brother, Joseph, sister, Janice, and grandnephew, Brandon.

Jamie Lynn Markle
Jamie Lynn Markle, age 43 of Tapiola,
passed away on Monday, Dec. 31, 2007 at Marquette General Hospital.
Jamie was born Sept. 24, 1964 in San Diego, California. She
married John Markle on December 8, 1983 in Saginaw, Michigan. They
resided in Merrill, MI until 1995, when then they moved to Tapiola.
Jamie was a woman of achievement; a distinguished Arabian
horse breeder, Otter Lake Wildlife Director, published art and photo
works, avid outdoorsman and sporting guide.
She is survived by her husband John; step-daughter Kelly
Turgeon; and many family and friends.
On Friday, Jan. 4, 2008 at 6 p.m. family and friends will
gather at the Doelle Senior Center in Tapiola, MI in remembrance of
Jamie.

Sadie Pauline Hutula
Sadie Pauline Hutula, age 89 of Watton, MI
was called to her eternal home on Christmas morning, Dec. 25, 2007, at
Baraga County Memorial Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit where she resided
and was well taken care of since 2001.
She was born Jan. 1, 1918 in Watton, MI daughter to August and
Fanny (Niemi) Pihlajamaki (P. Maki). Sadie attended school in Watton and
graduated from Kenton High School in 1936. She went to work at the
Watton Co-op right after high school. Sadie married William A. Hutula on
Sept. 10, 1939 in Wakefield, MI. She worked as a bookkeeper for various
family owned businesses including the Wood Development Corporation.
Sadie was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She loved picking
berries, crossword and jigsaw puzzles, flower gardening, knitting, and
reading. Sadie always enjoyed family gatherings.
Surviving are her children Linnea (Gerald) Nopola of Watton, Dale
(Linda) Hutula of Watton, Carole (Marvin) Rajala of Watton, Kristine
(Donald) Duhame of Ishpeming;grandchildren Deborah (Brian) Schultz of

Norma Christine Brown, age 89 passed away
on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007 at Shulstad Leisure Living in Baraga.
She was born June 18, 1918 in Pequaming, daughter to Christian and
Nora (Nilsen) Almli. Norma graduated from L'Anse High School in 1936.
She married Virgil Brown in 1939 in L'Anse. They owned and operated the
Nite Owl restaurant from 1950-75. She loved to bake, cook, travel, shop
and being with her grandchildren. Norma was a member of the L'Anse
Baptist Church.
Surviving are her children James (Susie) Brown of L'Anse, Thomas (Ruthy)
Brown of L'Anse, and Joseph (Martha) Brown of Houston, Texas;
grandchildren Jimmer, Lisa, Kim, Chris, Johnathon, Andrea, Jennifer,
Eric, and Adam; eight great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Jacqueline H. Locke, 79, of L’Anse, passed
away at Bayside Village, Sunday, Dec. 23, 2007 following a lengthy
illness. Jacqueline was born Oct. 21, 1928, in Flint, Michigan, daughter

graduated in Flint. She attended Baker Business School in Flint. In
1954, she married Glenn Locke in Flint and he preceded her in death in
1980. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Flint.
Jacqueline was a school librarian and involved in a variety of
charitable activities. She did missionary work in Jamaica, and Mexico,
serving the orphanages and teaching the children. She made frequent
trips to Mexico where she became known as the “Chocolate Lady” as she
loaded up her motor home with candies for the children. She was honored
as one of Michigan’s most charitable women. She often traveled by
motorcycle to visit her family with her goggled dog in the sidecar. She
was one “unconventional lady.”
