Curtis Menard of L’Anse, his sons and a hired hand were tearing down this building in 1961 when its past was brought back to light. The Cohl & Levitan store stood at the intersection of Broad and Main streets in L’Anse, where Ace Hardware is now located. The sign painted on the side of the building was revealed after a layer of boards was removed from the structure. Menard recalled that Dr. Louis Guy had his office upstairs in the building back in 1938, and that before him, Dr. Hawkins practiced there. He added that Ben Cohl, who also had a store in Baraga, would drive a van stocked with work pants, boots, etc. out to area lumber camps, selling his wares to men where they worked.
