The schooner George Nester was launched in Baraga in 1887. The 207’ long, 35’ wide ship was impressive in its day. Les Tolonen contributed this photo, which he located on the internet. The vessel was shipwrecked on April 30, 1909, off the Huron Island Lighthouse. It had been converted to a barge and the towline to the steamer Schoolcraft broke in a spring blizzard/gale. The vessel was destroyed. Seven crew died as the U.S. Lighthouse tender Marigold attempted to rescue them. Parts of the hull and small artifacts remain in the water off the Huron Island.
